چکیده

The development of autonomous multi-agent systems acting upon the interests of one or more users involves the elicitation of preferences of these users. In decision theory, models have been developed with which one is able to perform this elicitation. This paper enumerates some common anomolies to existing decision theoretic preference elicitation models. We propose an alternative elicitation model that has been successfully implemented and used for investigating positive time preference; this is the phenomenon that people prefer to get things sooner rather than later. We present new results concerning this phenomenon regarding decisions in gain and loss situations over time. The contributions of this paper are (1) the presentation of our novel preference elicitation model, and (2) new results on the phenomenon of gain-loss asymmetry in intertemporal choice.

Survey of Preference Elicitation Methods

As people increasingly rely on interactive decision support systems to choose products and make decisions, building effective interfaces for these systems becomes more and more challenging due to the explosion of on-line information, the initial incomplete user preference and user’s cognitive and emotional limitations of information processing. How to accurately elicit user’s preference thereby...

Elicitation and Approximately Stable Matching with Partial Preferences

Algorithms for stable marriage and related matching problems typically assume that full preference information is available. While the Gale-Shapley algorithm can be viewed as a means of eliciting preferences incrementally, it does not prescribe a general means for matching with incomplete information, nor is it designed to minimize elicitation. We propose the use of maximum regret to measure th...

A social recommender system based on matrix factorization considering dynamics of user preferences

With the expansion of social networks, the use of recommender systems in these networks has attracted considerable attention. Recommender systems have become an important tool for alleviating the information that overload problem of users by providing personalized recommendations to a user who might like based on past preferences or observed behavior about one or various items. In these systems...

Elicitation, Recast, and Meta-Linguistic Feedback in Form-Focused Exchanges: Effects of Feedback Modality on Multimedia Grammar Instruction

This research explores the effects of three computer-mediated feedback modalities, that is, elicitation, recast, and meta-linguistics, on the learning of English participial, gerund, and infinitival phrases among Iranian intermediate-level EFL learners. The overriding focus of the present study was to investigate whether different types of feedback given through form-focused computer-human exch...

Elicitation strategies for soft constraint problems with missing preferences: Properties, algorithms and experimental studies

We consider soft constraint problems where some of the preferences may be unspecified. This models, for example, settings where agents are distributed and have privacy issues, or where there is an ongoing preference elicitation process. In this context, we study how to find an optimal solution without having to wait for all the preferences. In particular, we define algorithms, that interleave s...
